Andreas Schelfhout transformed the flat, windswept Dutch landscape into an ideal of clarity, atmosphere, and quiet pleasure. Although he painted seascapes, trees, dunes, and Romantic ruins, his frozen canals brought him lasting international recognition.
He studied nature closely, filling sketchbooks with trees, light, and remembered compositions. His ice scenes became so admired that collectors affectionately called them “Schelfhoutjes.”
Artist Note
Schelfhout painted his first ice scene at nineteen and continued returning to the Dutch winter through the final years of his life.
